The earth You could use for a footstool
But the atmosphere wouldn’t even reach to Your knees.
The sun could peer over Your shoulder as a reading lamp
If only Your brilliance didn’t obscure its light.
The rushing winds of the storm speaks volumes of power and might,
Yet You choose not the represent Yourself in them.
You choose instead the gentle whispering breeze
Strength in peace personified through Your holy being.
Gallant stallions pawing for a run would have regally carried You around,
A simple mule instead announced Your arrival to the capital.
The jewels and gold of the world aren’t worthy to sit on your brow
But You settled for a prickly crown of thorns
The most luxurious of cloth could not even begin to cover You
Yet You took on coarse white cloth to cover Your skin;
And later You even went naked, exposing Your human frailty
To whoever who would care to see.
Lions would roar loyally at the sound of your voice
Yet it was not them You came to see.
Lambs would follow You if You were their Shepherd
But Your crook was not for them to look to.
Birds would flock together at your whistle,
And fish would fin circles around You and fly if You wished them to;
But You didn’t choose them, instead You chose us
Who doubted, mocked and crucified You.
The first stanza came long before the rest, and it's the one I like most. This is my God, God of wonders.
