Everlasting Love

Yesterday in CF we were singing a song that had the phrase "everlasting love" in it. We were singing "We declare our everlasting love to You" and it was repeated several times in the song. I joined in, until the full meaning of the line sunk in.

Everlasting love.

My love's not like that. If anything, it would be the antithesis of "everlasting". Short, intermittent, finite, what other synonyms are there for non-everlasting? My love for Him would be that.

And more. Sometimes its not just the absence of love, but more than that. Doubt. Accusations. Ignoring Him. How can I say my love is everlasting? It is only His love that was, is, and is to come. His love is wider, and deeper than anyone will ever know. It spans the whole of humanity, yet is personal to each one of us. His love is everlasting - nothing and no-one else. And it's this love that continually draws me back to Him and renews my own.

No, I don't have everlasting love. Only He can boast of this kind of love. I can only show shadows of it. May I be able to do this, and may those who see these shadows be drawn towards the light.
