Last time in geography lessons I used to take great comfort in the fact that Malaysia was free from almost all kinds of natural disasters: earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. Evidently the list did not include tsunamis. Seeing the footage was awe-inspiring: 5-storey waves battering into buildings, debris being pushed into streets, bodies bobbing in the water, mothers crying over their dead children. Malaysia didn't get it that bad, but Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and India (Chennai/Madras being of personal interest) did. A certain family I know holidaying in Penang is safe (thank goodness!) but they said bodies could be seen on the roadsides. More tsunamis are expected to hit, but the worst of the damage has probably been done. And the timing could not have been more "perfect".
