Some things will just never change, try as we might. The roads are clear, the ruts are so deep they become miniature rivers when the showers come. They, like parallel lines, will never cross, unless some supernatural power forces them together. Both must move, both must lose their parallel properties, for them to meet. But the wheels of time turn, moving down their own parallel rut lines.

It seems ironic that in the same paper that has headlines about Pak Lah condoning inter-faith discussions, Marina Mahathir touches on being firm enough in one's faith to be able to stand among your equals and not get swayed. (What is that Article 11 anyway? The news article wasn't exactly clear :p) Aren't inter-faith discussions a useful tool to understanding the different ways people think and act, which should lead to peace and harmony? Talking about Marina Mahathir, her columns are great rumination material. Her last one on double standards on the matter of free speech was right on the dot.
And it can go deeper than that. My life holds not two but a spectrum of standards, imposed by self as well as others, that is a muddle to get through. Striving towards perfection is always not far from my mind, but settling for second best (or third etc.) is so much easier, and comfortable. I must remember the words of CS Lewis - Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.
